Columbia Car Accident Lawyers Report: Top 10 States with the Worst Drivers in the U.S.

Not all motorists on the road are as safe, sober, careful and attentive as we would like to believe. In fact, most people with even just a little bit of experience driving have likely come across at least one driver who’s been distracted, drunk, overly aggressive or just flat-out careless on the road.

Report: Top 10 States with the Worst Drivers in the U.S.

Shedding more light on this issue, a recently published report1 has ranked every state in the nation according to how risky and dangerous the drivers in that state are. To develop this ranking, they reportedly evaluated data such as (but not exclusive to) the following for each state:

The Findings

After crunching the numbers and conducting some complex analysis, researchers ranked the following as the top 10 states with the worst motorists in the nation:

  1. Florida, which has the second highest rate of uninsured motorists, as well as high incidence of traffic tickets being issued to drivers
  2. Mississippi, which has the fifth highest rate of traffic-related fatalities, as well as the 12th highest DUI arrest rate in the nation
  3. Oklahoma, which has the single highest rate of uninsured drivers in the nation, as well as the 15th highest rate of DUI arrests and traffic-related deaths
  4. New Jersey, which has the second highest rate of traffic-related deaths in the nation
  5. Delaware, which has the single highest rate of traffic-related fatalities in the U.S. (but, interestingly, has a relatively low DUI rate, which is why this state was not ranked higher by researchers)
  6. Alabama , which has a pretty high traffic fatality rate, especially when considering the fact that about 1 in every 3 of these deaths is caused by/involves a drunk or impaired driver
  7. Vermont, which has one of the highest DUI arrest rates in the nation (but, interesting, has a relatively low DUI-related death rate)
  8. Tennessee, which has a high rate of uninsured drivers, as well as a high traffic-related death rate (though the DUI arrest rate for this state was fairly low when compared to other states that made the top 10 ranking)
  9. Texas, which has one of the highest DUI fatality rates in the nation (and, interestingly, has a relatively low DUI arrest rate)
  10. Nevada, which has one of the highest incidence of traffic citations being issued and has been ranked 17th for DUI arrests (and, remarkably, this state has a high rate of insured drivers).

While nearly half of these states are located in the southeast – and despite the fact that North Carolina came in at #20 (for having the worst drivers in the nation), notably, South Carolina was not in the top 25 rankings.

What do you think about this report and its findings? Have you shared the roads with drivers in any of the above states? Did you find them to be particularly risky, reckless or dangerous?
