Plaintiffs are alleging that a popular weedkiller, “Roundup,” is responsible for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in over 1,300 lawsuits that are now pending. This line of litigation arose after the International Agency for Research on Cancer (“IARC”) issued a report listing glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup—as a probable carcinogen.
Thus far, three cases against Monsanto—the creator of Roundup—have gone to trial and all three have resulted in jury verdicts in favor of the Plaintiff. In March, a federal jury awarded a couple over $2 billion as a result of the husband’s Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, finding that Roundup played a substantial role in causing his cancer. During post-trial motions, however, the judge reduced the award to approximately $87 million.
New cases continue to be filed on a daily basis. Potential plaintiffs include agricultural workers, nursery and lawn care workers, and even those who tend home gardens and lawns as a hobby.
