Side-impact collisions usually occur in intersections, parking lots, or on highways involving passing cars and several lanes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in the past 20 years side-impact crashes have increased from around 20 percent to about 50 percent due to excessive speeds and higher numbers of SUVs on the road.
